CML/Entek/IRD C6691 Vibration system power supply repaired and tested
Two CML/Entek/IRD power supplies were recently sent to EPS for repair.
The unit was powered but exhibited inconsistent start-up behaviour. A large number of power capacitors were removed from the board for a detailed inspection. While most capacitors were found within specification, some had reduced capacity. Due to their age, all of the large capacitors were replaced as a precaution. Although the removed capacitors tested functional, they were still replaced.
Further investigation revealed the units failure to consistently operate on both the AC and DC input sides. The board, which has a 24VDC and 85-265VAC input, contains a switching circuit that transitions seamlessly in case of failure.
A deeper inspection led to the discovery of failed capacitors, evidenced by leaked dielectric fluid. This fluid had contaminated the PCB, causing track damage and shorting in some components. After repairing the PCB tracks, cleaning the board, and replacing the capacitors, the circuit was fully restored, with all outputs and changeover functions working correctly.

CML/ENTEK/IRD
The 6600 Series Equipment Protection Monitoring System was originally manufactured by CML, EGT and later an improved version 2, with completely revised power and relay cards, by ENTEK IRD. They are in use in a large number of power generation installations in the UK and around the world. Transducers such as accelerometers are attached to, for example, a gas turbine to monitor vibration and accelerations at strategic points.
An alternative would be to replace the system with a modern replacement such as Sensonics G3, Bently Nevada 3500 or others.
